Preparation for EEG Test

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of the brain.

EEG/ERP-based assessment is recommended when the following conditions are suspected:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), Learning Disorders (LD), Anxiety, Sleep disorders, Depression, Panic Disorders,  Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI) , Post Traumatic Amnesia (PTA) , Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Minimally Conscious State , Malingering , Personality Disorders /schizoid, antisocial, and borderline and many others.

Preparation for an EEG assessment typically involves the following steps:

  1. Discontinuing medications: Some medications can interfere with the EEG reading, so it is important to inform the doctor about all the medications being taken. The doctor may advise to discontinue certain medications before the test.

  2. Avoiding caffeine and alcohol: Caffeine and alcohol can affect the brain's electrical activity and thus should be avoided before the test.

  3. Shampooing hair: The scalp needs to be clean and free of any hair products such as oils and hair spray. This is because the electrodes attached to the scalp during the test need to have a good connection to the skin.

  4. Wearing comfortable clothing: The patient should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily removed for the test.

  5. Refraining from napping: It is recommended to avoid napping before the EEG test, as it can alter the brain's electrical activity.

It is important to follow the instructions provided by the doctor or the technologist to ensure accurate results from the EEG assessment.
